If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness!Ģ4 No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.ġ7 But thou, when thou fastest, anoint thine head, and wash thy face ġ8 That thou appear not unto men to fast, but unto thy Father which is in secret: and thy Father, which seeth in secret, shall reward thee openly.ġ9 Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal:Ģ0 But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal:Ģ1 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.Ģ2 The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light.Ģ3 But if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness. Amen.ġ4 For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you:ġ5 But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.ġ6 Moreover when ye fast, be not, as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance: for they disfigure their faces, that they may appear unto men to fast. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.Ħ But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.ħ But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking.Ĩ Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him.ĩ After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.ġ0 Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.ġ2 And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.ġ3 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.ģ But when thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth:Ĥ That thine alms may be in secret: and thy Father which seeth in secret himself shall reward thee openly.ĥ And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. It is mockery for disobedient lips to utter such a prayer.6 Take heed that ye do not your alms before men, to be seen of them: otherwise ye have no reward of your Father which is in heaven.Ģ Therefore when thou doest thine alms, do not sound a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory of men. ![]() ![]() He, in effect, prays the prayer of Gethsemane, "Not my will, but thine, be done" (Lu 22:42). None can pray thus who have not merged their own wills into the divine will. For this coming we may now pray, and the prayer is answered in part by each success of the gospel. It did speedily come, but in its fullness, and in its final triumph over evil, it has not yet come. ![]() The Messiah's kingdom had not yet come, but was proclaimed by the Lord as at hand. Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven - May all the inhabitants of the earth do thy will as willingly as the holy angels: may these do it continually even as they, without any interruption of their willing service yea, and perfectly as they: mayest thou, O Spirit of grace, through the blood of the everlasting covenant, make them perfect in every good work to do thy will, and work in them all that is well pleasing in thy sight. ![]() 6:10 Thy kingdom come - May thy kingdom of grace come quickly, and swallow up all the kingdoms of the earth: may all mankind, receiving thee, O Christ, for their king, truly believing in thy name, be filled with righteousness, and peace, and joy with holiness and happiness, till they are removed hence into thy kingdom of glory, to reign with thee for ever and ever.
